Walmart Payment Methods

A Walmart store.

Walmart is a big-box discount store that sells everything you need. I’ve heard it described as brick-and-mortar Amazon before. This store sells TV sets, smartphones, and other electronics. It also sells garden supplies, groceries, pharmaceuticals, clothing, and personal care products, among other things. It’s a convenient store to visit if you’re looking for something specific and you don’t know if other stores will have that product. While specialty stores do sell some products that aren’t available at Walmart stores, you may still be able to buy these products on Walmart’s website.

Walmart also has lower prices than many other stores, especially if you buy its private-label Great Value products. And because it stocks a wide variety of merchandise, it has lower prices than competing stores in many other niches. Additionally, this retailer stays open fairly late so it may still be open when other specialty stores are closed. Anyway, here are the payment methods you can use at Walmart.

Does Walmart Accept Major Credit Cards?

Walmart accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover cards. It accepts both debit cards and credit cards.

Walmart also accepts cash and personal checks. It accepts $50 and $100 bills as well, which is noteworthy because some retailers don’t accept large bills. Its self-checkout machines can also accept $50 and $100 bills but some Walmart stores have closed their self-checkouts because of theft issues.

Does Walmart Accept Mobile Payment Methods?

Walmart doesn’t accept Apple Pay, Google Pay, or Samsung Pay for in-store purchases. It doesn’t accept PayPal for in-store purchases either. It has its own mobile wallet called Walmart Pay and this wallet supports contactless payments. If you have Walmart Pay installed on a mobile device, you can scan a QR code to pay for your purchase at the store.

Walmart also has iPhone and Android apps. These apps have many popular features that you might see separately on department store, grocery store, and drugstore apps. You can use these apps to see what you’d look like if you put on a new outfit and you can also use them to manage your drug prescriptions. These apps also support Walmart Pay. You can use PayPal to make online payments at Walmart as well.

Does Walmart Accept International Payment Methods?

Since Walmart accepts Discover cards, it’s likely that it can also accept JCB, UnionPay, and RuPay global cards by processing them through the Discover network. It’s not clear if these international payment cards can be added to Walmart Pay.

Does Walmart Accept EBT?

Walmart accepts EBT for in-store purchases of qualifying items. Its stores have relatively large grocery sections so you can use this payment method to purchase a wide variety of food products there, but Walmart also sells many other products that you can’t buy with EBT.

Some Walmart stores have pop-up restaurants inside them, such as Subway and McDonald’s, as well. In California and several other states, these restaurants may accept EBT at their stand-alone locations if they sign up for the Restaurant Meals program. But Walmart doesn’t participate in the Restaurant Meals program so you might not be able to use EBT to purchase prepared meals from restaurants inside its stores.

Walmart also accepts EBT for online orders. Like many major grocery store chains, it has signed up for the SNAP online purchasing pilot program. But some of its smaller competitors haven’t signed up for this program yet and can’t accept EBT for online orders.

Does Walmart Accept CareCredit?

Walmart accepts CareCredit. This payment method is primarily used at hospitals and medical clinics, and aside from major drugstore chains Walmart is one of the few retail stores that accepts it.

Does Walmart Accept Buy Now, Pay Later?

You can use the BNPL apps Zip, Affirm, Klarna, and Sezzle to shop online at Walmart. You can also use PayPal’s buy now, pay later service to shop online there. And you can use Affirm to make in-store purchases there as well. Walmart’s self-checkout machines also take Affirm but again some stores have shut down their self-checkouts to prevent theft.

Does Walmart Have Its Own Payment Methods?

Walmart sells physical gift cards and e-gift cards and it also has a rewards credit card that’s issued by the bank Capital One. You might also see Walmart gift cards for sale at independently operated grocery stores and drugstores.

Walmart allows you to split payments so you can combine a gift card with a credit card to pay for a single purchase there. You can also use multiple gift cards in the same transaction. Its self-checkout machines support split payments as well.

What’s Another Useful Fact About Walmart?

Walmart is well-known for operating large supercenters but it also has smaller-format stores in some locations. Some cities in California have banned big-box stores but allow smaller chain stores to operate.

What Are Alternatives to Walmart That Accept Apple Pay?

CVS is a drugstore chain and discount store. In my opinion, Walmart is very similar to a drugstore because it has pharmacies in its stores and it also sells a wide variety of inexpensive merchandise, including groceries, over-the-counter medication, and personal care products.

Walgreens is a big-box drugstore that also sells a wide variety of products in addition to prescription medications.

Rite Aid is another big-box drugstore chain that sells many products such as groceries, supplements, and personal care products. It also has pop-up ice cream shops inside its drugstores.

Big Lots operates large warehouse stores that sell off-price merchandise, including groceries.

Target operates big-box discount stores that have pharmacies and pop-up cafes inside them. Like Walmart, Target sells a wide variety of products including smartphones, appliances, and clothing.

Grocery Outlet applies the outlet store model to groceries and it sells food for very low prices. It doesn’t sell many of the other products that Walmart sells, though.

Food 4 Less is another discount grocery store chain that sells groceries for very low prices and it stocks Kroger’s private-label products as well.
