Walgreens Payment Methods

A Walgreens drugstore.

Walgreens operates large big-box drugstores that have pharmacies and several retail departments. Its pharmacies provide prescription drugs, flu shots, and other healthcare services. In its other departments, this store sells over-the-counter medications, cosmetics, snack foods such as chips and soda, and personal care products such as shampoo and toothpaste, among other things. Its stores also have frozen food sections. One noteworthy thing about Walgreens is that some of its pharmacies have drive-thru lanes that are open 24 hours.

While Walgreens sells affordable products in its retail departments, it also sells prescription drugs and provides healthcare services. This drugstore also provides a wide variety of products and services in comparison with other stores. Because of these factors, like other drugstores, this store accepts more payment options than other types of retailers. Here are the payment methods you can use at Walgreens.

Does Walgreens Accept Major Credit Cards?

Walgreens accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover cards, so it supports all four of the major US payment networks. It accepts debit cards and credit cards.

Walgreens also accepts cash and personal checks. It uses Telecheck to decide if it will accept a check from a customer. It also accepts large bills such as $50s and $100s but will also check these bills to make sure they’re not counterfeit as well.

Does Walgreens Accept Mobile Payment Methods?

Walgreens accepts Apple Pay, Google Pay, Samsung Pay, and other contactless payment methods at its stores. I confirmed this information by looking up the profiles of its stores in my area on Apple Maps.

Additionally, Walgreens accepts PayPal and Venmo. You can use these payment options for in-store purchases by scanning a QR code to pay. You can use QR codes to make in-store purchases at CVS stores as well.

Walgreens also has rewards apps for the iPhone and Android phones. You can use these apps to make purchases and you can also use them to schedule an appointment for a prescription. And you can also use PayPal to shop online at this drugstore.

Does Walgreens Accept International Payment Methods?

Walgreens accepts Discover cards, so it’s likely that it can accept JCB, UnionPay, and RuPay global cards as well by processing them through the Discover network. You can also use Alipay to make an in-store purchase by scanning a QR code.

Does Walgreens Accept EBT?

Walgreens accepts EBT for in-store purchases of qualifying products. You can use this payment method to buy food there but you can’t use it to pay for other personal care products. Other drugstores, such as CVS and Rite Aid, accept this payment method for qualifying products as well.

Walgreens doesn’t accept EBT for online orders. It hasn’t signed up for the SNAP online pilot program. The other specialized drugstores don’t participate in this program either, but several traditional grocery stores with in-store pharmacies have signed up for it.

Does Walgreens Accept CareCredit?

Walgreens accepts CareCredit. While many hospitals and clinics support this payment method, Walgreens is one of the few retailers that accepts it. You can also use CareCredit at Walmart but you can’t use it at CVS.

Does Walgreens Accept Buy Now, Pay Later?

Walgreens has accepted Afterpay since 2021. It also accepts Affirm and Sezzle and you can also use PayPal credit there for both online and in-store purchases. It doesn’t accept Klarna or Zip, though.

Does Walgreens Have Its Own Payment Methods?

Walgreens sells gift cards and you can also buy gift cards from many other retailers at its drugstores. Walgreens also has a rewards credit card that’s provided by Synchrony Bank.

What’s Another Useful Fact About Walgreens?

Walgreens also provides passport photos. Other drugstores can often provide them as well.

What Walgreens Alternatives Accept Apple Pay?

CVS is Walgreens’ main competitor and both pharmacies have many locations in Southern California. Like Walgreens, it also sells groceries and personal care products at its stores.

Rite Aid is another major drugstore chain. One noteworthy thing about Rite Aid is that many of its drugstores have soft-serve ice cream shops. Some Rite Aid stores also have pop-up GNC supplement shops.

The Medicine Shoppe is a chain of independently-operated, franchised pharmacies. These pharmacies primarily sell medicine and don’t stock many of the other products that are available at Walgreens and the other big-box drugstores.

GNC is a supplement store. It sells a wide variety of supplements but it’s not a drugstore so it doesn’t have pharmacies that can sell prescription drugs or provide vaccinations.

Vitamin Shoppe is another supplement store. Like GNC, it sells several products that are also available at Walgreens but its stores do not have pharmacies.

Nutrishop is also a supplement store. It’s another store that sells vitamins, supplements, and related products but doesn’t provide prescription drugs or vaccinations.
